Pastoral Care Area

Given the changing nature of our communities, our area demographics as well as the changing number of clergy, the former pastor-centered parish needs to be transformed to see itself as a community centered parish that enjoys the presence of a pastor.

Within the Diocese of Syracuse, the 127 parishes have been configured into 7 Vicariate Regions, governed by a Vicar Forane, and 21 Pastoral Care Areas (PCA).  Binghamton is located in the 7th Vicariate of the Diocese of Syracuse.  St. Patrick’s & St. Thomas Aquinas, while together linked are also configured within a PCA for the Westside of Binghamton. There are five parishes that comprise the PCA 2 in the 7th Vicariate: The Church of the Holy Trinity, Ss. Cyril & Methodius, St. James, St. Patrick’s and St. Thomas Aquinas.

The PCA is asked to look for ways parishes can work together and share resources in achieving a parish’s mission. The parish is the presence of the Church in a given territory, an environment for hearing God’s word, for growth in Christian life, for dialogue, proclamation, charitable outreach, worship, and celebration. In all of its activity, the parish encourages and trains its members to be evangelizers. In brief, the parish is to teach to serve and to sanctify. We are called to know our Catholic faith, to live our Catholic faith and to share our Catholic faith! And to do so in love and with joy!

In addition to St. Patrick’s and St. Thomas Aquinas the following parishes make up our Pastoral Care Area – Vicariate 7: PCA 2:
